In 2008, we saw a complete overhaul of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 user interface. Now at the beginning of December, there is going to be another round of updates that are equally game changing. The new Xbox Dashboard is based on the Metro design, now familiar to us from the Windows phone. It provides a simple and intuitive hub from where the user can easily access their games, music, movies and other content. Windows 8 is set to feature a similar interface, tying together all three platforms for a unified customer experience. In addition, Microsoft’s motion detection system Kinect will allow…

The rise of Reddit to market prominence has worked in direct contrast to the decrease in Digg interest (their main competitor in the social voting realm). Now, with Reddit’s launch of a new range of recent updates, their user experience seems certain to bring the site’s status into the premier league. With the installation of an add-on for all supported browsers, the Reddit page has been given a custom dashboard and a selection of fresh features. The new Accounts option allows for easy switching between multiple users on the same PC, and a comment navigator allows users to easily find…

It will be no surprise to many to hear that Gmail has just received a revamped appearance, following an accidental leak of the new design a few weeks ago. Users are now able to experience the fresh layout for themselves, which has been compared to Facebook’s look in many ways and comes with some interesting new features. Users will now able to customise the positions of sidebars and menus and use high resolution images as a background. Comfortable, Compact and Cozy default options are available to control the density with which mails are displayed, and a new search function allows…

Predicted in 2006 to make a 2012 debut, cutting-edge nano technology applied to user interfaces has made a slightly earlier appearance, with Nokia showing off their new prototype at an event recently in London. Dubbed a ‘Kinetic’ display, their device has a flexible body constructed by lining elastomer (essentially bendy plastic) with carbon nanotubes. The tubes are pliant enough to allow the device to bend, based on the electrical resistance generated from motion. This relatively simple principle allows for revolutionary new steps in user interface design.  While the technology has been in use for some time, the cost of carbon…
