This week we all experienced ‘Blue Monday’; a day that the wider social media have claimed to be the unhappiest day of the year. Considering we’re only 20 days into the year so far, it’s good to know that that day is behind us and it can only be good news from here on in. If you’re feeling those January blues, we’ve compiled a set of our favourite apps to boost those serotonin levels, drop the Christmas pounds and keep you well fed and entertained until the next pay cheque comes in… and if that isn’t enough, there’s a cat meme. Movie streaming service Netflix has released an update to its Android app this week – following from what seems like a strong cycle of usability testing, it boasts an overhauled user interface and more streamlined navigation. Despite several updates, up until now the Netflix Android app did not deliver the best user experience, so people mainly accessed the app as the best source for video streaming on Android and Chromecast. This morning an updated version of Adobe’s Photoshop Express app was made available on Google Play, featuring a more streamlined user interface and other useful new additions. The Photoshop Express 2.0 app has been given a complete overhaul and is now fully compatible with Android 4.4. Adobe’s latest image rendering engine has for the first time been built into the Android version – this allows for vastly improved performance and the capability of tackling large files while editing. Microsoft’s Office Web Apps has now received a refresh, bringing a new user interface and additional useful features. The Office Web Apps interface now sports a more flattened look, with improved spacing to make it touch-friendly – although it isn’t a fully touch-optimised UI, Microsoft has previously announced that it’s developing a version of Office that has been designed specifically for touch and Windows 8.1, so the latest enhancements are a step in that direction. iPhone and iPad users will be pleased to hear that a new version of the GoodReader PDF app for iOS 7 has today been released, boasting a revamped user interface, new features and more convenient access to tools. The company has also said that the update will allow certain PDFs to render faster. This latest release is the first update since September 20 of last year. The fresh UI offers simpler navigation and improved overall usability. Those who’ve been reluctant about using their Android device with their Netflix account if they share it with others need never worry again – thanks to a recent update, queues and recommendations will now remain separate and private.
